About Tathra Surf Lifesaving ClubProudly serving the community since 1910
Strong and growing for 100 yearsService & Commitment

The Tathra Surf Club continues to provide a strong community presence and with 9 patrols rotating throughout the season, it ensures the safety of its community and visitors to our beaches. Tourist outlets in Tathra and the surrounding region are proud of our Club and promote a patrolled beach and our diligent volunteer lifesavers heavily in their marketing campaigns. We retain a high safety record due to the commitment of our dedicated lifesavers.
Tathra continues to retain its young members through a strong commitment to ongoing training and education. Nippers is a strong contingent of the club. Junior development is nurtured to ensure we have lifesavers in the future.
Jack Beale Memorial Trophy
The Jack Beale Memorial Trophy, for the highest point score inter-branch competition, has been held by Tathra on numerous occasions. This is a direct result of strong club mentoring by its senior members, creating a community and competitive spirit.
Water safety and coastal environment awareness education
Tathra Surf Club provides water safety and coastal environment awareness education to diverse communities including local and interstate schools and community groups. In the past 12 months in excess of 20 schools have participated in surf and water safety classes. This program has created a lot of interest from country areas – from Canberra to Cooma to Wagga.

Our training officers and assessors welcome new members and can provide them with the training they need to become active lifesavers.

George Bass Marathon
Tathra has continued its unbroken record of being one of only two surf clubs to have entered and completed the George Bass Marathon since its inception in 1975. The George Bass is the longest open surf boat marathon in the world. Our 'Boaties' are a force to be reckoned with in what is one of the most gruelling surf boat marathons. The Marathon is held every two years. In 2012, Tathra will be entering two crews - a veteran and a women's open crew. Our boaties are busy training for the Marathon and are competing in a number of boat races leading up to the event in January.
Tathra's Wharf to Waves Weekend
The Tathra SLSC is the key driver in Tathra's Wharf to Waves Ocean Swim which started in 2002 and has grown to over 500 ocean swimmers. In 2010 the event attracted the Korean Triathelete team who were training in our region in preparation for the Beijing Olympics. The weekend event now includes the ocean swims, a 2k fun run, and a 30k bike ride. This major community fundraising event has provided the Tathra community with over $130,000 for community services – the surf club, the local pre-school and the rural fire service all benefiting from the event. Without the dedication of the Surf Club's Wharf to Waves Sub-Committee, the patrollers who provide water safety for the swims, and our members who run the events, these vital funds could not be realised.

Lifesaving Energy in Australia
Tathra has been the 'beacon' of Lifesaving Energy in Australia. In 2007, in International Year of the Lifesaver,Tathra SLSC became the first surf club in Australia to invest in and install a wind turbine and solar panels as part of our way of educating the community about the importance of reducing greenhouse emissions through the use of renewable energy. 'Lifesaving Energy' was a joint community project working with local stakeholders including Clean Energy for Eternity (CEFE)

Overall Clean Beach of the Year Award
Tathra SLSC works with Council and three other local committees to ensure the Tathra Beach and its environs are cared for and recognised locally and nationally. Tathra's Beach was recognised for its pristine state when it won the NSW 'Overall Clean Beach of the Year Award'. A combination of providing a clean beach environment, a friendly beach for visitors, excellent facilities including BBQs, play areas for children and a safely patrolled beach won a number of awards for the community.
